چکیده

[1] Using a finite element method for elastoplastic dynamic analysis, we examine the effects of a low-velocity fault zone (LVFZ) surrounding a fault on a spontaneous dynamic earthquake rupture. A Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is used to characterize nonelastic off-fault response to earthquake ruptures. We find that the presence of a LVFZ alters the distribution of off-fault plastic strain and results in larger final slip and larger peak slip velocities on the fault. These effects show a LVFZ-width dependency. A supershear (relative to the shear wave velocity of country rocks) rupture transition is observed with a LVFZ width of 400 m or larger (up to 2 km). The presence of a LVFZ increases the amplitude of ground shaking at stations within the LVFZ and induces high-frequency oscillations at stations within and near the LVFZ. Citation: Duan, B. Pulse-like ruptures induced by low-velocity fault zones

[1] Low-velocity fault zones (LVFZs) are found in most mature faults. They are usually 100–400 m wide and have 20%–60% wave velocity reductions relative to the country rock. To study the effect of LVFZs on earthquake rupture and the radiated wavefield, we conducted two-dimensional (2-D) simulations of dynamic rupture on faults that bisect a LVFZ, considering a range of velocity reductions and w...

Properties of inelastic yielding zones generated by in - plane dynamic ruptures — I . Model description and basic results

We discuss results associated with 2-D numerical simulations of in-plane dynamic ruptures on a fault governed by slip-weakening and rate-and-state friction laws with off-fault yielding. The onset of yielding is determined by aMohr–Coulomb-type criterion whereas the subsequent inelastic response is described by a Duvaut-Lions-type viscoplastic rheology. The study attempts to identify key paramet...

Reply to comment by Y. Fialko on “Deformation of compliant fault zones induced by nearby earthquakes: Theoretical investigations in two dimensions”

[1] Fault zone structure and properties may contain important information about past earthquake rupture and subsequent healing processes. Damaged fault zones are observed geologically in the field [e.g., Chester and Chester, 1998; Ben-Zion and Sammis, 2003]. Seismic studies have revealed the existence of low-velocity fault zones around active faults [e.g., Li et al., 1998; Ben-Zion et al., 2003...

Evaluation of Nonlinear Response of Structures to Near-Fault Ground Motions and the Comparison of Results with Near-Fault Simulated Records

Near-fault ground motions have caused very much damage in the vicinity of seismic sources during recent earthquakes. It is well known that under specific circumstances, intensive ground shakings near fault ruptures may be characterized by short-duration impulsive motions. This pulse-type motion is generally particular to the forward direction, where the fault rupture propagates towards the site...

Asymmetric off-fault damage generated by bilateral ruptures along a bimaterial interface

[1] We perform numerical simulations of spontaneous dynamic rupture governed by a slip-weakening law along a bimaterial interface (fault) with off-fault damage in the form of Coulomb plastic yielding. Off-fault plastic yielding stabilizes the wrinkle-like slip pulse in terms of a decreasing rate of slip velocity growth. With a variety of model parameters, ruptures on the fault are bilateral, wh...
